Uganda Travel Information Guide for Visitors

Welcome to Uganda

Uganda, famously known as the Pearl of Africa, is one of the most diverse and rewarding safari destinations in Africa. Visitors come for mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, wildlife safaris, rich culture, and stunning landscapes ranging from tropical rainforests to savannah plains and crater lakes.

Entry Requirements

Most travelers need a visa to enter Uganda. Visitors should apply online through the official Uganda eVisa system before arrival. Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry and should contain at least one blank page.

Health & Vaccinations

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Uganda. Travelers are also advised to consider vaccinations for Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Malaria exists in many areas, so travelers should consult a doctor about malaria prevention medication before traveling.

Best Time to Visit

Uganda is a year‑round destination. However, the best time for gorilla trekking and wildlife safaris is during the dry seasons from June to September and December to February when trekking trails are easier and wildlife viewing is excellent.

Currency & Payments

The local currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). US Dollars are widely accepted for tourism services such as safari payments and park permits. Visitors should carry newer USD notes printed after 2009. Credit cards are accepted in many hotels and lodges, but cash is useful for smaller purchases.

Gorilla Trekking Information

Gorilla trekking is one of the most popular activities in Uganda. It takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. A gorilla trekking permit is required and should be booked in advance due to limited daily availability.

What to Pack

Travelers should bring lightweight clothing for warm weather, a light rain jacket, comfortable hiking boots, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, binoculars, and a camera. Long trousers and long‑sleeved shirts are recommended for forest trekking.

Electricity & Plugs

Uganda uses 240 volts electricity and British style three‑pin plugs (Type G). Visitors are advised to carry a universal travel adapter for charging electronics.

Internet & Mobile Networks

Mobile phone coverage is available in most towns and many safari lodges. Visitors can purchase local SIM cards upon arrival for affordable data and calls.

Tipping Guidelines

Tipping is appreciated in the tourism industry. Visitors commonly tip safari guides, lodge staff, and porters. While not mandatory, it is a nice way to recognize good service.

Safety Tips

Uganda is considered a safe destination for tourists, particularly when traveling with a professional safari guide or tour operator. Visitors should follow park ranger instructions during wildlife activities and keep valuables secure.

Culture & Etiquette

Ugandans are known for their friendliness and hospitality. Modest dressing is appreciated in rural communities and visitors should ask permission before taking photographs of people.

Airport Information

Most international visitors arrive through Entebbe International Airport, located near Lake Victoria about 40 km from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda.
